Volunteer > Volunteer Opportunities > Irvine Ranch Wildlands and Parks
One of the most rewarding ways to experience the beauty of The Irvine Ranch wildlands and parks is as a volunteer. Volunteers have a crucial role in the land, whether it is serving as docents on a mountain-bike ride through Fremont Canyon, teaching middle school students about ecosystems in Limestone Canyon, helping to maintain a trail near Bommer Canyon or planting oaks near Weir Canyon.
New volunteers are always needed, and can participate in any number of ways:
Docents Volunteer docents help lead interpretive nature tours (hikes, mountain-bike rides, equestrian rides) throughout The Irvine Ranch wildlands and parks. These tours are at all different levels, from easy strolls through wooded meadows to strenuous rides up mountain peaks.
People interested in becoming docents are required to take the Naturalist Training Class offered at Saddleback College (each fall) or at Fullerton College (each spring). The class provides information about the local wildlands as well as the different agencies that manage them, and is highly recommended for everyone, even those who are not interested in volunteering. Upon completion of the class, interested volunteers can then apply to the Irvine Ranch Conservancy to become a docent. Interested parties should submit a volunteer interest and information form through the Web site or call (714) 508-4757.
Trail Guides Volunteer trail guides assist docents with interpretive nature tours (hikes, mountain-bike rides, equestrian rides) throughout the land. Trail guides assist with program registration, group management, setup and cleanup, and act as sweeps during public programs. Ideally, trail guides would strive to become docents as they become more familiar with the land although it is not required. Interested parties should submit a volunteer interest and information form through the Web site or call (714) 508-4757.
Trail Boss Volunteer trail bosses assist in the managing of trail or habitat maintenance and restoration projects throughout The Irvine Ranch wildlands and parks. After receiving specific training a trail boss will lead and manage groups of land stewards on regularly scheduled stewardship, citizen science, or trail maintenance activities. Interested parties should submit a volunteer interest and information form through the Web site or call (714) 508-4757.
Land Steward Program The Irvine Ranch Conservancy will establish regularly scheduled stewardship opportunities and would love for the public to participate. The projects include exotic weed removal, wildlife studies, trail maintenance, seed collecting and planting. No training is required. Interested parties should submit a volunteer interest and information form through the Web site or call (714) 508-4757. Interested parties will be notified of up coming events.
Volunteers Volunteers are always welcome for general purposes. In an effort to connect to the community the Irvine Ranch Conservancy regularly participates in festivals and promotional events. These events are excellent opportunities for volunteers to assist. We are also interested in volunteers that can do clerical work or other general tasks for the organization. Interested parties should submit a volunteer interest and information form through the Web site or call (714) 508-4757.
